The only confusion was that I expected the update to take place immediately and nothing happened, so I tried again. Still no joy so I read the instructions carefully which said to make sure WiFi was on ie, aeroplane made off, and then leave the Kindle switched on and connected to the charger overnight. I did that last night and came down this morning to find a message saying the software update had completed successfully.
My email begins "Your Kindle Paperwhite (5th Generation) requires an important software update to continue downloading e-books and using Kindle services. ", which gives me the model.
It then goes on to say "Visit our help page for a complete list of impacted devices" and gives a link to click on.
That will give you all the information you need and also gives instructions for how to do the ugrade.
