Gordon Ramsey Kitchen Nightmares Usa

Just watching an episode and thought back to a previous episode where the restaurant owner sacked a really crappy employee that had been there years.
Do workers have less rights in the US? Because I'm almost sure that if you are rubbish here they can't just sack you. You would be taken to a tribunal double quick for unf are dismissal or something.

US workers have far fewer rights at work than Europeans do. There's no universal right to paid holidays and the actual number of days holiday available to most employees each year (even if they're unpaid) is far lower than we get. There's no maximum working week or legislation relating to worktime breaks or the minimum period between shifts. Minimum wages are lower, with many states sticking to the Federal minimum, which is equivalent to £5.10/hour. Unless individual states have enacted contrary legislation (or, of course, where an employee's contract states otherwise) then, unless specific laws relating to discrimination have been breached, employees can be fired at any time.
I took a contract in the U.S. for a year, unions were banned within the workplace, and our manager spoke regularly of how dreadful unions were. We had an employee sacked while I was there, who had been at the facility for some years, essentially with no notice or warnings, and told to leave straight away. Don't know how strong the grounds were for her dismissal.
There were plusses, I got paid a lot more over there and with a much lighter caseload. On the downside, the patients for the most part were blooming rude!
