From The Telegraph in 2012:
"Cancelling a policy also attracts fees, with Budget Insurance charging £75 per cancellation of a car insurance policy and Axa, Zurich, Sheila's Wheels and More Than charging £50 or more for the same service"
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/insurance/9204592/Fees-charged-by-insurers-for-policy-changes-and-cancellations-condemned-by-consumer-watchdog.html

See the tables here for the cancellation fees charged by 22 insurers:

(which suggests that fees in the £40 to £50 range might possibly be regarded as 'typical')
I paid £50 to cancel with Hastings in November 2015
