Don't know it was a northern thing, obsolete now, but a 1/2 pint used to be called a gill, when in fact it was only a 1/4 pint.

As far as I know a gill of beer is still half a pint.

I thought a gill was a quarter of a pint. Who remembers those 1/3 pint bottles of milk we used to have at school? Is there an Imperial unit for 1/3 pint?

Remember the 1/3 pint school milk. Also milk was delivered in 1/2 pint bottles as well as pints.
