My car is on it's last legs and I want to buy another before it dies and then scrap the one I've got now. I pay my tax annually in one go. What happens when I buy another and scrap the old one?

You can get the remaining tax refunded.

ps ...on "it is" last legs?
Tax the new one. You can now pay monthly by direct debit if you wish and claim a repayment on the old one if the tax has any value.

Thanks everyone
Just be aware that you will have to tax the new car from the beginning of the month in which you buy it and that the refund on the old car will only be for complete months excluding the one you scrap it. In other words, you will pay twice for 1 month.
