Dwp Grants And Benefits ....
8 Answers
My brother has had to give up work due to ill health after 36 years working in the building trade and has now split from his wife.
He has been told that once he has been allocated a house by the DSS he will be given a grant to help with furniture.
As our family have never had to claim anything before we are trying to find out if he will be given money to buy furniture or if they actually supply it.
Please can anyone advise ... Thank you very much ....

However individual local authorities have schemes for discretionary 'crisis and support' assistance. In Kent they don't pay out money but simply seek to provide suitable furniture directly:

whereas in Sutton grants (or loans) are made directly to the applicant:

From the wording of your question it seems likely that your brother will receive a payment from the local authority (or the place that he's buying from will receive the money directly), rather than him actually being provided with furniture but, as all such schemes are discretionary and vary from one authority to another, we can't provide a definitive answer without knowing which council's area he'll be living in.

Yes it was my daughter and the cash was from the council not the SS / DWP.
We got a £300 grant from the council when my son had to go to a boarding school due to dyslexia, it was to buy the , rather expensive, uniform.
Not sure where you are but in our area there is a warehouse full of furniture run by a charity in conjunction with the council. It is all used but checked and good quality and is sold to people who are in a situation like your brother is in. Much cheaper , 3 piece suit for £75 ! and it would pass for new!
