we're thinking of driving from Berlin to poznan or szczecin in poland for some cheap nights out and shopping for cheap cigarettes.

trouble is neither of these places come up on any routefinders so i'm having trouble estimating the distance

Does anyone know how far it would be and if this would be a good idea or not?

For Szczecin take the A11(E28) out of Berlin,,its about 130KM or 80 miles.

Poznan is worth a visit,and is more convenient by train,as it is on the main line to Moscow from Berlin.If you want to drive its 275 KM or 171 miles.The route is from Berlin take the A12(E30) to Frankfurt(Oder),across the border this becomes the E30 to Poznan.

Do you recon they search every car or is it just like random - say 1 in ten or one in a hundred?

I'm not even sure there is any border control passing from poland to germany (EU free movement of people and all that)?
