We have old dark brown inner doors, the cheap material 'wood'. As they are plain facing would being painted white look ok or would it look nicer if I bought new panelled doors.

New doors would be my preference.
I saw someone who painted their doors a pale grey which I thought looked nice.
Depending on the job you did they will look as nice as you make them.
That said I'm not that keen on the non-panelled door look. You're sure it's not a panelled door someone in the 60's put a layer of hardboard over ?
Dot, about 2 months ago I done our Daughter house, they had 3 Bedroom doors like the one's you are talking about, it a task you can do with good results, take off the handles & start rubbing the door down completely, as stupid as it may sound I use a roller with Emulsion as the undercoat ( You may laugh ) I then rubbed that down and went on with the final coat of Gloss White, good done & perfect.
