im dying to get a tattoo on my lower back ive never had one done yet. ive asked many people to describe the pain. some say burning, other say like an itch needing a scratch, others say like stikin a sewing needle in deep many times. as i dont like pain i would like to know many others experiences and i have also heard there is now a gel or cream invented to numb the area, you just put it on the night before.im from ireland so i dont know if other countries are far more advanced in the tattoing profession

Hi there, ive had a tattoo on my lower back and i must say its the worst one ive had up to date. Ive got 23 over different parts of my body and it hurt like hell whilst being done, after it was finished though it wasnt really painfull afterwards, apparantly it is a worse pain for guys as we have more nerve endings in our backs, but i just plodded on and gritted my teeth.

Just had a big wing done on each ankle. One was a cover up, which was the most painful one I've ever had, but the other one wasn't too bad.

As they only have the needle on you in little bursts, what works for me is to take a bit breath in as the needle is coming onto your skin, and then breath out really slowly while the tattooist is drawing. It calms you down, stops you holding your breath and tensing up, and gives you something else to think about.

Other people are quite right, in my opinion, it does feel like a needle being dragged along your skin.

Good luck, but be prepared to go back again and again, cos once you start you won't be able to stop!
