//A member of a group of World War Two pilots who underwent pioneering plastic surgery has begun a campaign for a permanent tribute to the airmen. Sandy Saunders suffered 40% burns after a plane crash during an RAF flight. He was sent to Sir Archibald McIndoe, who tried out treatments on his "guinea pigs" because he had no reference book to refer to.

A crowdfunding page has been set up to help finance the memorial, which will be unveiled in November.//

What terrible injuries those people suffered. They have my unequivocal gratitude and admiration. I hope he succeeds in raising enough funds for the planned memorial.

Wheras these brave airmen should never be forgotton, I think that they could be incoporated in a more fitting memoral to Sir Archibald McIndoe.

A very remarkable,skillful and humane person. He realised the disfigurement of,once ,handsome young men was a dreadful personal trauma.
He made it his business to liaise with the people of East Grinstead and ask them to accept his patients without prejudice to their hideous appearance.
East Grinstead was known as the 'town that didn't stare' and gave hope and confidence for the recovery of these brave lads.
It was Archie McIndoe's idea to have a permanent barrel of beer on the ward table for the patients. Certainly a man's man.
