Why does my cat make a "chirpy" noise

When my cat has been woken up or when i let him in the house, he makes a chirpy noise. Its a cross between a meow and a purr. Why does he do this?

Because he is saying hello! Its a greeting. Cats have several distinct calls, thats one of them. I always think of it as Chirrup
