Recommendationof a breed of dog suitable for asthmatics

I want to buy a dog buy I don't know which breed would suit me best as I have asthma. Can anyone recommend a breed that I could live with.

i have heard that labradoodles are an excellent breed for those that suffer allergies.pop onto the kennel club website and they'll advice you.

yes either labradoodle or poodle,something that has real short hair and doesnt moult too much

As long as they don't sleep in your room or bed it can be ok. Depends on the extent of your asthma. I have aslo heard poodles donlt really moult.

I did read somewhere about "flander??", the dead skin of dogs which can be an allergen as much as the hair. Something similar to that, don't quote me.

It's called 'dander' jedimistress, and yes you are right, dander can be just as much a problem as the dog hair/fur. There is no dog that is completely OK for allergy sufferers as everybody is different.

if it's fur that causes the asthma we had a greyhound she hardly shed any fur

Hi, With reference to 'Dander'. There are wipes available to use on both dogs and cats that help with the problem of dander. First of all it is dander and not fur that causes problems for asthmatics. All dogs shed this. And secondly labradoodles are a crossbreed so the Kennel Club will not have details - they were originally bred by Guide Dogs but it was found that there was no advantage over pure bred breeds so they stopped doing it. Now they have become over priced 'designer dogs'. Poodles don't moult -they have to be clipped and even Chinese Crested (Hairless) Dogs shed dander!

Not all asthmatics have a reaction to dogs - try visiting people who own dogs and see whether it affects you. Provided your dog is well groomed and clean then it may not affect you.

yes lankeela i know labradoodles are x breeds but when i said for nobfelt to go on kennel club site i meant they could advice on other types of dog that may suit.as for calling them designer dogs that a bit unfair they are not that well known compared to the true tinkerbells of the world.

im asthmatic too, i have been brought up with dogs so it doesnt affect me much unless they are wet! If i dont vacuum at least once a day my allergies start.

Most other pets such as cats and rabbits set my asthma off and birds are terrible for asthma.

Bishons are a good breed as they have wool instead of hair. Like a poodle but smaller and cuter! My grandparents have 1. I have a basset hound, short haired breeds are best.

Hi, i am asthmatic and allergic to nearly every animal with fur, apart from my dog. she is a parsons jack russell cross with a wire hair fox terrier, she is a lovely dog mid sized and doesnt affect my asthma at all. i dont think it has anything to do with if they drop hair (as she does) or the dander or hair type, although i do feel wire hair is better for allergies, it is you personally the best thing to do is ring breeders and ask them if you can sit with their dogs to see how they affect you i did and it worked, now we have a lovely dog and no side affects. good luck.
