Arresting some of the Russian hooligans would be a start, Anne

Anne...well they could have arrested more of the trouble makers, instead of letting them escape into the crowd, ready to come out again fighting.
This events were said to be amongst the most heavily policed in French history, due to what had happened in Paris last year, and the Police don't seem to have acted with enough intelligence somehow.
I wonder if the SYP gave them any advice ?

I am amused by the sudden wave of sympathy for the English football hooligans in France. Their reputation, hard earned, for thuggery preceeded them, but this time the French and Russian thugs were ready for them.
A few of the little darlings have already be prosecuted and jailed
// Seven English football fans, three Frenchmen, and an Austrian have received prison sentences in France for taking part in clashes ahead of a Euro 2016 match between England and Russia in Marseille on Saturday.

England fan Alex Booth, 20, was sentenced to two months, while another, Ian Hepworth, 41, was handed a three-month sentence by a Marseille court on Monday.
Both were banned from entering French territory for the next two years, AP reported.
Booth and Hepworth received sentences for throwing bottles at French law enforcement officers and rival fans.
Hepworth explained in court that he had not intended to hit police with the bottle, but only “wanted to impress my new French friends,” according to Daily Mail.
Booth apologized before French police and the city of Marseille, saying: “This is not like me. I’m not a violent person. I love my job and my family. I’ve never been involved in football hooliganism. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Meanwhile, Booth’s father called the ruling a “disgrace,” accusing French authorities of “making a scapegoat of a poor kid like Alex’’ and urging them to “find the real thugs,” AP reported.
Later on Monday, five more England supporters received sentences from the French court for similar offences.
Ashley Kelly, 26, Steven Cornell, and Ian Stockley were ordered to spend three months behind bars and banned from France for two years.
Paul Jackson, 21, and Lee Philips, 23, were handed a lesser punishment of one month’s imprisonment and a ban. //
Your son admits throwing bottles at the police and you say its a "miscarriagge" and "a disgrace". No wonder the lad grew up to be a violent thug.

These people don't drink. Ironically they're inspired in part by English hooligans of years gone by. Look in today's Times for example. There's an interview with a leading 'ultra' in Moscow who sold his flat to travel to Euro 96 and filmed England fans rioting in Trafalgar Square, then took it back home and studied it. But while Englamd has move on from this, these people are not only into it but taken it to a whole new level. I compare it to affection for English music of several years ago. Always behind the times, but latching onto it as there's nothing original of their own
They are hard to arrest because, as I say, they aren't falling around *** and are well organised and move quickly. Plus the French police I am sorry to say are less than efficient

Ymb,
Sorry I cannot support English hooligans, but you are welcome to. If you think supporting English hooligans makes you more patriotic than me, that is your problem.
The English yobs are not alone, and so far a few French nationals have been arrested, one receiving the highest sentence of the current arrestees. There is trouble in other French cities where there are no English fans, and it appears to be the French hoologans that are the problem.

Exactly, umm, their reputation goes before them. But it is unfair to criticise and condemn based on reputation.
N Ireland and Poland fans were attacked in Nice by French ultras, and Ukrainians were attacked by "Germans" in Lille the other night, tho, so it's not just England who've got singled out.
And by the way I accept fully that some England fans did tings they should not have done. Lobbing bottles at the CRS is plain dumb.

I am not singling out English hooligans. I know that other countries hooligans are just as bad, if not worse. I am not the leased bit bothered that Russian thugs bring shame on their country. But I am bothered that "our" yobs bring shame on us.
They "bottle" the police and their daddies say their golden boys are scapegoats and their prison sentences are a "disgrace". The scum and their scrotey fathers are just low lifes who should never have been been allowed a passport in the first place. And hopefully won't for a while.
