For me there is no such thing as either.

The noises in my head are so loud (more so at night when all else is quiet) that it is akin to living near a busy airport or something. Constant whistling, shrill rapid tapping (I heard the same noise a few years ago when a stone got caught in the wheel of the car) and engine like thrumming all compete to be the loudest.

When I wake in the dead of night and with my eyes closed I see the constant swirling vortex of thousands upon thousands of tiny coloured lights that have no real shape but throb with eerie incandesce.

Someone once discribed the lights as visual Tinnitus. How very apt considering I actually have Tinnitus.

I often wonder if it will send me mad one day?

Those are good suggestions, AP....but when the noises are in your head it's really difficult for outside noise to block them out......you can almost end up concentrating so much on both noises that it actually makes things worse...x
What does silence sound like?

Well, if you're sedatephobic (like me), utterly terrifying!
Really, Chris.......do you have to have constant sound?..x
Yes. I can't get to sleep unless there's some noise around. (I usually sleep on my sofa with my PC left on; the sound of the fan is sufficient to calm me. Otherwise I'll have to turn a radio on).
I find the olive oil solution interesting, I too have tinnitus I think, the intensity varies, it can be a very far whistle, like now or it sound like the radio's on but untuned. My mother always used warm olive oil soaked cotton wool for earaches, remember the days when it had to come from the chemist? I might give it a go though maybe not over heat it!
You have my sympathy.

I have low level tinnitus, have had for, oh I don't know, about 20 months maybe. Luckily my mind manages to filter most of it out except when I think of it. Dread it getting worse one day, hope it never does.

I would doubt that, if you have coped up until now, it is going to actually send you mad one day. I'd not heard of visual tinnitus before.

High time the medical research worked out a simple cure. Maybe there isn't enough money in it.
Oh don't overheat it Zebo.....I used a little metal spoon which made it worse I think.....the tremendous pressure I put on my ear to stop the pain may have moved things and help stop the tinnitus....whatever did it, it's wonderful to have silence again...x
