I read the Koran recently. All of it. I don't recall anything about hitting women. The mention of Stoning only appeared in the notes which were added later, not in the original text. There was not a single word about honour killing- not One Word. There was quite a lot about divorce and rape, though.
There are lots of places ( market places, etc ) where muslims are giving away free copies of the Koran. For instance, New St Birmingham. Go get one and read it.

In the middle ages we could beat women here so long as the stick was no thicker than your thumb, hence the phrase "rule of thumb", so going by this islam should catch up with us in about 4-500 years time.

Naomi - it's not, but it is difficult to conduct such a debate in isolation - as a (nominally) Christian country, we are similarly exposed to the tendency for extremist attention-seekers to justify their warped views by pointing at their personal interpretation of which ever religious tome backs up their views.
