Does this mean it will be a general election, or just new leader for the Torys ?

// Ken, I'd have thought that goes without saying - but apparently not.//
( leader of the tories = leader of the country )
in 1962 the queen took her own legal advice ( !!) on whether the macmillan/home transfer could take place without a general election
and was advised - yes
however when Brown replaced the arch-Bliar - the question was re-raised about whether there was a need for a general election
and the same question has been raised this morning on tee vee
[ that comment was about the queen being required to accept as prime mininster, the person with a majority in the house of commons ]

MP's in the House of Commons will choose the two names to go on the ballot paper for the election of a new party leader and thus presumably the new Prime Minister. Then the Ballot papers will be sent to Conservative party members who will make the ultimate decision. The new P.M. may think that with Jeremy Corbyn at the helm a General Election is very winnable and will thus seek his/her own mandate.

wilson's resignation didn't precipitate a general election either - and callaghan went on to serve until 1979.
the matter of EU membership isn't a party political issue - a general election at this time would probably not be good, the party divisions are so profound we'd likely end up with another coalition, or a minority government.
