morning, folks, haven't the faintest where to put this question - it's actually from Mr. Chox, so here it is in Chatterbank ...

Led to believe that wind velocity diminishes as it tracks inland from the coast. Is there a rule of thumb which states that wind speeds may drop by, say, 10 mph for every 50 miles inland? For example, wind speed may be 70mph off the Welsh coast, but by the time it reaches, say, Birmingham, the speeds are reduced to 45-50mph?

No rule of thumb chokkie. Lots of variables, like air pressure. Wind can travel in different directions and different speeds at different heights. different temperatures can also affect wind speed and direction.
