I have just booked my day return ticket up to Town for a meeting this Thursday. Because I need to be there at 09:00 I can't get an off-peak ticket, but £176 sounds like an awful lot of money to me. I could fly anywhere in Europe for a lot less than that !

Good research Chris. Well done mate.
I don't know how they justify the prices - that's just obscene, particularly given the crowding / lack of comfort.

I used to do my Birmingham to Alicante or Bristol to Valencia commute for a quarter of that price.
It makes you wonder what the cost of a ticket on HS2 from London to Birmingham will be, assuming it ever gets built.
Around my area you can't use a Rail Card until after 9am , I thought it applied everywhere.

Eddie...I have used my Senior Railcard on a few occasions since 2013, and nearly catch the same train up to Town...the 05:58, and I have never had any trouble using getting the 33% reduction. See here :

http://www.senior-railcard.co.uk/using-your-railcard/travel-times-tickets/

I guess my journey falls into the !st category :::

"Standard and First Class Anytime and Anytime Day Singles and Returns"

Perhaps when you have tried to use your card, your journey doesn't fall into this type, although "anytime" would seem to mean a pretty open sort of ticket. For instance, my journey will be a day return, but a fully "go and come back when you like£ ticket might not be valid.

But the £30 pa cost would seem to be a good way of saving, if you are able to use it.

The full cost of my trip would be about £240 without the rail card !
