i was told - donkeys years ago - that vodka couldnt freeze and that the best place to keep it is in the freezer. but my mate stuck a bottle in his freezer yesterday and its now a big block of ice. what's going on?!

When you put it in the freezer (at -18C) the water will freeze but the alcohol will not. Therefore the liquid portion has a much higher alcohol content. If your vodka does not form ice in the freezer then your freezer is not cold enough and I would be wary of eating any food that has been stored in it.
This might not apply to some specialist Polish vodkas which are over 65% alcohol.
