I recall my days in Paediatrics and the case of a 10-year-old girl who weighed more than 100kg. Some of the reasons her mother cited for her obesity included a "fat virus", a genetic abnormality and under-active thyroid. When asked if there was a family history of obesity, the mother would reply, without a trace of irony, "No, not at all." (The whole family was morbidly obese).
A mother (or father) should take responsibility for their children and stop trying to dodge blame.

The parents are acting as enablers. That's not too much love, that's a weakness, being unable to discharge parental responsibilities properly and say, "No", when appropriate. In fact they may even be the cause rather than the ones unable to stop their child. I'm well aware that some folk continue to feed as if it were an act of love even if those they are feeding are trying to lose weight.
That stated that's not to say that the child can't have psychological or perhaps physical issues that force him to perpetually feel hungry and maybe extract & store energy efficiently. The situation needs proper investigation.
