How to design a logo?

I want to design a logo. I have had a go in Word, using Wordart etc but can't do anything too impressive! Is there any other way to do it or would I need to download a programme?

Paint Shop Pro is pretty good at that .. called Corel now.
So is Adobe. Microsoft Publisher too.
You may find a powerful photo editor is better than any word processor software.

Look for some free fonts and use that as a base. Check out other websites as well. I don't mean directly copy but just get some ideas.

These allow rescaling and formating of the logo without loss of definition
