High Pressure Fuel Pump

Just broken Down in my 1.3 Vauxhall combo van, 05 plate. RAC man said that the fuel pump was leaking and the engine had shut down because there was so little fuel getting through.

Firstly, anyone have any experience with this and is it fixable....eg could it be repaired or will it be a new pump.

Secondly, I've just had a quick look on eBay and a new pump is nearly £500, does that sound right?

I presume you are talking about a Derv Pump? If the fuel pump is leaking & it is a diesel, then you have air in the System Hammer.

I done a job for a neighbour of mine Hammer, he had a derv van that kept cutting out, after a look around the fault was the Fuel seal in the filter, I replaced that job sorted, if you can, use a car power wash around the area of the pump & see if it is the pump. if you do decide Tony's route, mark the pump if you intend to remove the unit, on refitting don't use the Starter to prime, make sure the Fuel filter is full then hand primmer, make sure every Injector pipe is tight, + the inline fuel line.

As TWR says .. try the simple things first. If you dont have pressure washer get a cup of deisel and 'Paint' the engine block with it, scrubbing any stubborn marks. Then just put your water hose on it, all the crud will drop off.
The clean block will allow you to identify where the fuel is leaking from. If it does happen to be the fuel pump then I'm afraid the pump will need to be removed. There is very little you can do to it yourself as specialist equipment is needed to regulate the pump once it has been overhauled.
I'd say your choices are limited if it is the pump ... recondition or replace. Either way it is unlikely that you could refit the pump and set it to it's optimum position without the required timing equipment. When a pump is refitted a whisker out either way and you have lost your power.
Clean the block and go from there ..
