As Mamya indicates, the internet has largely replaced door-to-door sales agents. I don't know of any 'fashion catalogue' retailers who still use such agents. Just a few 'specialist product' companies still trade that way, such as Betterware, Kleeneze and Avon.
I've been told that, for those who stick at it long enough (and become a team leader), the money isn't too bad with Betterware - but it must be a hell of a lot of graft, for very little money, initially.
I've also had brochures from a firm, apparently trading in a similar way, offering greetings cards, etc. Unless there are lots of people who buy their greetings cards in bulk (which I doubt), I simply can't see how their agents can make any money from the job.
