He is Type 2 diabetic with insulin twice a day and metformin tablets and has neuropathy in both feet. He cannot feel them at all. Got up this morning to find his big toe very swollen and full of pus. Went to our chiropodist, who luckily is about 80 yds away. She cut back the nail, cleared it out and dressed it but said he needed antibiotics. No walk in centre for miles so went to hospital. They would not see him as he had not phoned NHS on 111 but said there was a doctor available in the hospital to treat him but we had to phone 111 to make the appointment. So we sat in A&E and rang 111, answered lots of questions then told to wait and the doctor would phone us back very soon. About an hour later a nurse turned up and handed us a prescription for antibiotics. He did not see a doctor and I'm sure he didn't speak to a doctor. We did get some advice on the phone which made me smile though "If in pain take paracetamol or ibruprofen, but if anything swells up then please remove all jewellery immediately and raise his feet above his heart". If only! Back home now for a nice cup of tea and watching the cricket.
