if you want her prosecuted, NoM, what sort of punishment would you have in mind that wouldn't hurt the baby as much as her?

Criminal law is a pretty ineffective instrument for enforcing good parenting.

I would never leave a young child in a locked or unlocked public area, in any weather, for any length of time, and especially if not in my sight. And I can't imagine doing so. If you leave a young child in a car it is a contemplated action and a risk

I think this should be reported to social services, not with an intention of ant prosection, but with a view to a visit and a stern reprimand and warning.

Got nothing to do with being perfect, we all make mistakes and things can go wrong. But this wasn't a mistake. A boiling hot day and child/children shut in car, just to go into a corner shop!

My mother was brilliant. Didn't stop me spending so much time in A&E.

We can't keep an eye on them constantly, and accidents will happen, but you can judge someone for purposely leaving them in a hot car.

No one is claiming to be perfect.I find it odd that some ABers a week or so ago expressed their glee that a matador received the ultimate final punishment for cruelty to animals by being gored to death by the bull!!They said "Good". Seems the bull gets more sympathy for mindless cruelty than children.

Retro - that might be because the mother didn't set out to be cruel.

She could be a very good mother besides that 'avoidable' and 'stupid' mistake.

I haven't cheered the death of any matadors. But it still leaves open the question: what exactly would you want a prosecution to achieve in this case?

You get cautioned for pissing in an alleyway ... this is a far worse event imo.

On the thread mentioned, I did not rejoice in the Bullfighters death.


As a parent who has made many mistakes and had lapses of memory when mine were young ( won't bore anyone with instances) - I know how fortunate I have been.

This was a truly outstanding thing to do, everyone was aware of the heat and as a Mother/Guardian of a seven year old this lady must surely have known the potential consequences.

I hope the Police Officers words were stern indeed and the shock has made her think carefully for the future.
