If new batteries don't help, and a good greasing of the mechanism neither, then time to get the experts in garage doors, in. You still have the info from the place you bought it from ? Otherwise Yellow Pages/Thomsons.
If your remote operates any part of the doors operations then the batteries are okay.
Have a look at this link, it will, give some food for thought.

does it have manual open/close button? If this works maybe the button on the remote is faulty.
Up often takes more effort, so the mechanism may need a clean/grease as Geezer suggests. Did it just stop of a sudden or has it been getting worse?
I had a similar problem with my garage door a couple of years ago when I'd been away from home for about 6 weeks. I rang the people who had installed it and they suggested turning off the power to the door for a couple of minutes and then putting it back on. Problem solved.
It sounds like a faulty reverse contactor in the control box.

Thanks for the feedback Jordy - not everybody is so considerate.
