Is it slow on taking in water when filling to wash and rinse? If so check that the hose that feeds in water is not pinched or kinked. You could also switch off the supply and remove the inlet hose to see that it is not blocked.

Thanks Togo, will get hubby to try both ....

Another possible factor would be if the pump does not function properly - the program does not move on until the machine is empty. Yet another would be if the heating element is for some reason inefficient - in hard water areas it can become encased in limescale - again, the program does not move on until the correct temperature has been reached. In both cases you need to watch the machine when water should be pumped out and /or the water heated.
