Actually, you're right.

I don't think the denizens would actually kill someone who sidled up to a group of black men and called them the N word, but no doubt they would hand down a few well-deserved slaps.

JTH - yup...I don't. I think that THEMOTLEY1 might be operating off a set of stereotypes.

Stereotypes can be useful, but sometimes misleading...like my own one which suggested that a white bloke calling blah blah blah.

The armed services are not a race apart with special dispensation to indulge in racist banter, so long as the recipients don't get to hear about it.

The point here is not that the 'banter' was aired publicly, and exposed for the vile Neanderthal racism that it is. The point is that these views are unacceptable, and the notion of sharing them as a 'bit of banter' does not make them acceptable.

There may be 'a few thugs' - but they are seriously outnumbered by a large indigenous black population who probably don't think that racism is funny, and might not appreciate it being aired in their presence.
