Does This Sound Like A Scam?

I listed an item for sale on Gumtree at 1.00pm today. Within 15 minutes I had a text asking me to email them with my best price. It's been unsold on ebay for nearly 3 weeks so I was a bit surprised in the interest so quick (it's a bit of a specialist item).
Anyway I emailed with the answer and then had a very quick message back asking how long I had been using it. By the time I could answer they had chased me for a reply. Once I replied they emailed back asking for condition (it's clear on the ad), location and email address for PayPal. Pretty much straight away I had another email chasing for a response and wanted my email address for PayPal.
So by now I'm getting a bit twitchy about this so I logged onto my BT email page to start a reply and in front of my eyes, all emails from this address just vanished. So I check my phone as I had been reading on the emails and my iPhone has "no message selected" on the screen.
Checked my spam box and they're not in there. How can messages I receive just disappear from my inbox?? Don't you normally get an email that someone is trying to recall an email?
Does it sound fishy or am I a bit paranoid!!
