wisdom tooth extraction

Hi How long does it take for the hole left afer a wisodm tooth extraction to settle down and stop hurting?

I have a Q for you MangoPete.. I take it you have just had a wisdom tooth out.. Did it hurt? :o(

I think I have to have mine out and I am scared.

Mine are coming through now and the bottom 2 seems to be growing to the side. I have a bad feeling they will have to come out. They don't hurt though.

Mine never hurt when they were coming through but the dentist decided I would need all four removed anyway!

I had to spend two days in hosp and a week off work after. My face was bruised and couldn't eat properly for a few days.

Glad I had it done though coz means my teeth are a lot straighter coz they would have been really crowded.

I wont tell you as I had problems with an abscess also local aneasthetic doesn't work on my left side so it took over two hours to deaden. My dentist is very good though and whipped it out in under a minute.
i think I have dry jaw.

I had my top two out at the dentists with a local anaesthetic - no problem. They came out easily without any pain and i was fine afterwards. The most annoying thing about the holes is getting food stuck in them but this comes out with swilling water in them. They heal up pretty quick - i'd say about a month or so and the soreness should stop within a few days. It's worth it all in the end!

sorry, didn't mean it to sound that bad!!

It wasn't painful as I had general anaesthetic and afterwards it was more uncomfortable than painful.

The way I see it, I have four less teeth to worry about cleaning therefore less chance of decay and, as I said, straighter teeth! :-)

I had a wisdom tooth extracted this time last year, didn't feel a thing when it came out, the only reason it bled so much was because I had worked myself up so much about it that I burst into tears with relief when it was all over, heart pounding the lot etc.. nothing too it really, hindsight is a wonderful thing :o)

Anyhoo, I think I remember that more or less by the evening it had settled down bleeding wise, the gum was tender for a few days afterwards but not really any pain. Occasionally tho I did still get toothache just like I did when the tooth was there which was a really weird feeling, this was even after a few months!!

If you've just had it removed and your still experiencing pain Pete, then ring your dentist as you may have dry socket and need to get it seen to.

Ruby both my bottom ones came in it an angle, they were sore but not too bad and have turned out ok. Dont be fraid to brush them firmly and visit hygienist regularly.

It usually takes around 7 days for the pain and swelling to subside, but this is highly variable. If pain persists behinf this time then there is a possibility of secondary infection and it might be worth a visit to the dentist.

Im sure angel-cake means well, but is very mis-guided, removal of wisdom teeth due to crowding of teeth further forward is never indicated. During life, provided teeth and gums are healthly they drift slightly forwards not back so remove the last standing teeth would do nothing to relieve crowding unless it was followed by extensive orthodontic treatment.

mrxla I didn't say that was why they were removed. they were growing at an angle right in to my other teeth. I also had one lower front tooth removed as my mouth was not big enough for all my teeth!

If they had grown through they would have pushed my other teeth together.

My dentist told me that I had to have all 4 removed. I was terribly scared about it. That was three years ago ! I never had the nerve to have it done ! One of the top ones has grown a bit awkward ( not straight, so that it's now touching my inner cheek slightly ), but it's not causing any problems. Plus, I had a bit of a space between my front teeth, and I now don't have it anymore, thanks to my wisdom teeth pushing the others. So unless it would cause discomfort or ruin your smile, then I'd say you don't need to have it done, Ruby.
