Evicting Illegal Sub Tenants
Just been watching a programme on nightmare tenants and one agent realised that the tenant wasn't paying the rent and had illegally sub let the house. It was now overcrowded and the tenants were not paying rent to the original tenant.
What I wondered is, why was it so difficult to get the sub letting tenants out?

Well the landlords were Asian? Is that what you meant Jackdaw?
No, of course it was nothing to do with ethnicity. They claimed they had been paying rent to the person who was subletting it. Unless they choose to leave voluntarily I assume you would need some sort of court order. The police can't just throw them out as they will say it is a civil matter I think.
It did show the downside of being a landlord

I think there is also some latitude...I remember watching a program on housing officials from a council who came across this situation...only different in that landlord knew about the sublet (even though he denied all knowledge) IIRC the council decided to allow the situation to be resolved through “wasteage” meaning that they allowed existing tenants to remain but monitored to allow no new ones and no replacements.
