As well as Christmas, there is Kwanzaa, Hannukah, various pagan midwinter festivals and so on. Individuals offer the greeting appropriate to their own beliefs or to the beliefs of the person they are communicating with.

Christmas will only die out in families or groups who let it die.
With each generation the way Christmas is celebrated has changed in many areas - but there are still many who uphold traditions - Carol Singing, rituals around when the Tree goes up and memories of ornaments from childhood, setting out the Nativity scene and attending Mass or other service.
It will likely never fully match the idyllic scenes portrayed on Victorian style Christmas cards for a lot of people but for some it is still held dear.
I also agree that commercialism has had a huge part to play, but we give in to that through choice.
