Why do Lidl keep opening and shutting their Tills, every few minutes ?

Every time I go there, they are always announcing that "Till Number whatever is closing"

They duly close this and then re-open it again 5 mins later !

Am I missing something here ?

I think it's because their staff do varied and numerous jobs and, when not required at a till, go and fill some shelves or something.
Lidl are having problems with their tills here in N.I. too Mikey. I assumed it was just one store but it must be a general problem
It's the mince pies and brussel sprouts that are clogging them up.
Perhaps the girls just need a wee.
Jackdaw is partly right - the French have bought them out and they are now In-Continent.....
tilly2 is correct
Tilly is right, Aldi work the same way. They only call for extra till staff when the queues build up and they close when they have died down again.

Tills are forever being shut and then re-opened, every few mins. One will close and it will open again !
Yes, we know mikey....Tilly gave you the reason - it's to get the maximum use of their (skeleton) staffing.
The French have bought Lidl DTC ?
DTC was joking, Sam. I think
It was humour ;-)
According to the staff it's a software update glitch
Ah yes ! I get it , girls need a wee, Lidl going in-continent. I was a bit slow there.
agree tilly

as you know I dont see well
and a fren pointed out something in the aisles of Lidl
and I said o do they have machine guns ?

and all hell broke lose - o well - I will limit my joshing to imitating the bloop of the cash register.....
Quite agree, Mikey. I like some of the stuff Lidl does (especially their Cava, which I believe you are somewhat partial to). But the business that you describe with the tills drives me and Mrs NJ crackers. Worst of all, you’ll be queueing for ten minutes, then they announce another till is opening and people who have just finished their shop go straight to that till and get served immediately! Aaaaargh!

I know their staff “multi task” but the frequency with which tills open and close seems a very strange way to run a shop!
staff are cheerful and satisfied where I shop

NJ....its the frequency that I don't quite understand.
Yes me too Mikey. Strangely enough I went to my local branch only this morning. I was in there for no more than ten minutes. Following your question yesterday I kept a mental note of the openings and closings. During that time I heard

"Till No 1 is now closing. We will be happy to serve you at another till"
"Till No 3 is now opening. Please place all items..etc"
"Till No 4 is now opening. Please place..."
"Till No 1 is now opening. Please.."
"Till No 3 is now closing. We will be happy..."

So, one till closed and reopened; another opened and quickly closed; another one opened (and probably closed by the time I'd left the car park). All in about 10 minutes. Meanwhile the instore bakery ovens were ding-donging to say that the rolls were cooked. I couldn't hear myself decide whether to buy Cava or Prosecco !!!!

Sounds very annoying, will stick with Waitrose I think ;o)
