I am working my way through all of Shute's book and I finished one of his best, at about midnight last night.

"The Far Country"

I read it first, about 30 years ago, but I had forgotten most of it. What a lovely book. Its a great pity that Shute is probably widely known for only 2-3 books, primarily for "A Town like Alice" but this one is a hidden gem. I would urge everyone to give it a go !

sddsddean....I too enjoyed "Trustee from the Tool Room", his last book and published just after his death I am led to believe.

I agree about "A Town like Alice" If I had been his Editor, I would have advised against the 1st part of the book, and this part is never seen in any adaptions for the screen.

But its a fine book nonetheless, and it deserves to be more widely read today, like most of his works.

And how prescient was "On the Beach" !

Oh Mikey Neville Shutes books were the very first serious adult reading for me at age 16 all of 60 years ago. I read them all . I think that I will now start all over again . I particularly enjoyed the Australian ones .

Patsy....the Aussie ones are my favourites as well...start by reading "The Far Country" again !

I have just finished The Far Country. Really enjoyed it and I found it very interesting how post war England was. It made
Me want to visit Australia too. I remember reading A Town Called Alice years and years ago and loving it. Now I will look at some
of his other books. Thanks for reminding me great author !

Samuraisan....try "Beyond the Black Stump"...similar to "The Far Country" in many ways, and just as enjoyable.

I am now on "Round the Bend"
