I can never understand why the soaps 'give away' the storyline when a big event is coming up. Would it not be better to keep it as a total surprise so that fans would want to see every episode in case they missed something?

It's to encourage new fans Eddie. I'm sure The Archers has picked up a few listeners that last couple of weeks and the Great British Bake off peaked massively last night because the sensational news given out made people want to see
a) their last chance to see it on a decent channel
and
b) what all the fuss is about
Either way, it's worth chucking out a spoiler here and there
