I have just received notification of a tax rebate - Very nice . They always used to include a cheque for the money but now you have to go on line - Which I'm not keen on for finance - if you want to receive the money on 3-5 days. If you don't claim online within 45 days they will send a payable order. Seems a little unfair. Any ideas as to how to get the payment the old way - but sooner than 45 days?
Just out of curiosity, how did you receive this notification?
If it was by post, addressed to you in person, it's prob kosher - although I'd check anyway?
If it was via an email, addressed, Dear Sir, etc - then it's more than likely a scam :(
No it was by post and the web page they direct you to seems kosher I assume that they will ask for bank details to pay the money in but I haven't got that far yet
Just rang them - and not a problem they will send a cheque but it will take up to 3 weeks "and then you have to take it to the bank" so we encourage people to go on line. The young lady was very pleasant and requested the payment whilst I was on the line - but it was a 'take it or leave it' situation.
I got one of these letters a couple of weeks ago and decided to wait the 45 days, because I am also reluctant to give bank details to a web site. Should be aroundthe middle of October I get the payable order.
I too received a rebate and activated this online. It is very secure and they don't ask for bank details as they already have for your pension payments.
I had a similar letter today and dealt with it online. There were lots of security questions and a code you have to enter which is phoned to you. It seems more secure than many web sites.
Give HMRC a ring to make sure it is genuine. Then, if it is, go online and secure your payment.
I had a rebate notification a few weeks ago. I could see it was genuine because there were details contained within it (income details from many sources). all of which tied up with my records. I nonetheless gave them a ring (on a number I had previously used rather than the one on the letter) and confirmed it was Kosher. Made my application on line and got the dosh within three days.
