I may well be mistaken, but shouldn't there be something like "year" after the first four words of 6 down in order for the wordplay elements to work? Perhaps I'm just being dim...
The second wordplay is as Jo calls it, but the first wordplay, 'May, in the past' only delivers MIGHT. It needs the word year ('May in the past year') to finish it off.
Yes, that's how I saw it Frogman. I should say that it's rare for Azed to make mistakes, and this may well be a slip by the rather less reliable Guardian website!
The clue in the print version is the same. Mistakes do pop up in Azed puzzles from time to time (the faulty anagram of NERITIC in 2,279 springs to mind) which is hardly surprising given that his crosswords are 'unedited'.
