Is this country still a democracy? I feel that over the past 30/40 years the opinions of the people haven't counted and that there seems to have been a deliberate 'dumbing-down' policy introduced. At one stage I used to value my right to vote;nowadays I don't bother too much, apathy or what?

well if people are failing to exercise their democratic right to vote, they aren't in a position to complain about policies
Was there not a recent referendum and we are now in the process of leaving the EU or did I dream it?
I actually think apathy is less than it used to be.

If you are not interested enough to vote I don't see that you are in a position to criticise tbh.
There was some research done on voter apathy but they couldn't be bothered publishing the findings...
yup....if you don’t vote then don’t moan.
There are no true democracies. Voting for an elite to push you around for the next few years clearly doesn't count. Still, you had a referendum recently. What more could you want ?
If you don't vote you have most right to moan. Not only is your view being ignored, there wasn't even any representative worth supporting who could be trusted to push your viewpoint. Double whammy against you.

Theresa May was,or is not , an elected representative of the Conservative part (I know she wasn't obliged to 'go to the country')but as such is not really someone I would have voted for ! The council of Lancashire refused permission for 'fracking',but have been over-ruled by the government. The Chinese offered May a lollipop and she took it(who's pulling her strings?)and then she stated that she voted to 'remain'! The margin was two per cent, in or out, and we still have children leaving secondary school without the knowledge to string a sentence together correctly or tackle basic maths with any confidence; simply because teachers feel under pressure to put their ticks in boxes to satisfy their head and subsequently their education authority, who in turn have to satisfy the stipulations of a government that is hardly representative of a divided country and populace that is denied the right to lawful demonstration and the denial of access to legal aid,in most cases, without either lots of money or contacts!
Must stop for my crusts.
