Analysing the tooth will have revealed background isotopes, etc. which will have been absorbed during the development of the dog. These have obviously placed the dog as having been born in the York area. Barring flying or rowing itself to Wiltshire it must have walked there.....probably in the company of humans.
I think the newspaper article leaves out much of the explanatory detail but it is fascinating nevertheless.

I'm not stunned by the discovery but do find it very interesting - this technology has many great applications not just in this field but in forensic and other scientific situations.
The fact the dog travelled with the people is the reason the word 'pet' has been used, as you say it may well have been a domesticated hunting dog but not a roaming wild one as they don't travel that far - have no need to.

so it could be context - archeological context
