Vauxhall gearstick...

....on a vauxhall gearstick there is a little 'cuff' thing' that I thought was to be lifted only when going into reverse, but my wife says must be lifted whenever you change gear.

Who is right?

You are of course. I once hired a Vauxhall and it was parked facing a wall and the first time I had driven a Vauxhall. After 15 minutes I gave in and it was "the girl" at reception who told me about the cuff thing.

Tell your wife if she lifts the cuff thing all the time she will eventually go into reverse gear when going forwards and then have to buy a new gearbox !

I did wonder, I only passed my test last week (I'm 31!), and we bought an Astra today. I did remember from a few lessons I had years ago in a Corsa that you lift the cuff for reverse, but didn't remember doing it for the forward gears.

My Vectra driving colleague also agreed with her, so you can understand my reluctance to mock my non-driving wife, especially with my inexperience behind, you know, that round thing you turn to make the car go left or right.......

Sorry to sound harsh but this question made me titter just for believing a woman about cars.

You only have to lift up when you need to go into reverse because you won't be able to access reverse if you don't.

I once tried to select reverse at 60mph.

Made my car sound like a jet engine!

On the other hand, a friend of mine went from 5th to 2nd at 70mph and blew his engine up!

And this woman driver has had 3 Vauxhalls since she passed her test, so you can trust me!!!
