...what caused his death? Everyone very shocked and upset in Ireland of course, but I haven't seen or heard anyone asking what caused his death. It's as though everyone is reluctant to talk about the cause. Does anyone know? I've googled it but found nowt. TIA.

A very interesting article Margo. However, the point which I am making is that a Fit Person Does Not Suddenly Die. I will accept that people who may appear fit can suddenly depart this life but, I would argue, they were Not Fit prior to their death; unless they hastened their departure or met with an unfortunate accident or deliberate action by another person or persons.

HansUrbanker....depends upon how you define "fit."
Clearly if one drops down dead, then there must have been an underlying cause, which had persisted without causing symptoms and hence one would call the person "fit" or better still,"apparently fit."
If you can run the 100yds in 9.7 or play international sport...then one clearly could be regarded as "fit", but then drop down dead on the field with a hitherto undiagnosed Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.
I think that we both know what the "ordinary person" means when they describe someone as "fit."
