Think I've solved it but not sure of my maths. I made it a = 12, b = 3 c = 63 (not sure on this one) and d = 1, getting 1459 when you do the sum involving the queen's death. But the answer above is one digit out I think. Any explanations? Good one this week, don't you think?

Hi Topcat, had a look at my Sunday times, and the poet must be John Dryden. so we're in N'ptonshire is that what you have ? the queen Eleanor ? from the village which I know you would drive to the monument to Queen must be at Geddington ? its a lovely site, and a river is close by and this is visited as the only one preserved the other is at wooton N'pton, if its a battle in this area of Northants then the Battle of Naseby springs to mind, will study it more later is this the area your in ? if so I know it well,

Hi Bordeaux.

Yes I have Geddington. Look more closely at Northampton for the battle which i have as a 15th century battle (unlike Naseby - Civil War??)

I agree Northampton seems the best answer
I only scanned it but the other battle field is Bosworth, richard 111 these kings were born at Fotheringhay, will look at it later, I will be going pass Geddington and will stop there for a picnic by the river, its well worth a visit and N'pton with Thomas a Becket they have done a great job on the well there, its amazing this puzzle and wonder if they acutally travel around as the village where Dryden was born is off beaten track, as its great when you know the roads and travel them yourself !
Battle of the Roses , at Northampton.

Top Cat 2:- been playing with this all evening. I get 1460 because Henry Chichele was the 62nd, see here:-

So, it looks like the Northampton battle as others have said.

Question Author

I had Chichele as 63rd because i forgot that one of them served twice! Have also gone with the Northampton battle in 1460.

Cheers everyone!
