i think its a wartime pilots catchphrase.

i always think 'ok chaps i'm going in, chocks away'

unless thats just a joke

Mixture of two common phrases there joko, "Chocs away ..." is the phrase used before take-off. Fighter aircraft, being small and light, had large wooden wedges placed in front of their wheels to stop them rolling. these usually had a rope or chain attatched. When the pilot was ready, he would should "Chocs away ..." to the ground crew who would pull the ropes or chains, and drag the chocs away from the wheels so he could take off.

"I'm going in ...." usually referred to a pilot who was about to either dive and make a bombing run, or engage an enemy aircraft in an aireal 'dog-fight'.

May be Dads Army (I keep thinking of Clive Dunn)
