Possibly the wrong section for this; sorry.

Does anyone know the name for the type of games you play by typing commands into a box at the bottom of the screen? I'm talking about the old DOS style games with gameboy-type graphics. Any ideas?

The first text based adventure games involved text input and produced text output only; these became known as Interactive Fiction.

With the advent of (rudimentary) graphics, the next generation of these games were simply known as Graphical Adventure.

OK, cheers :-)
There's now a reasonably thriving community which creates text adventure games and you can get interpreters to run on most operating systems (many people play text adventures on PDAs.) Take a look at http://www.wurb.com/if/ to find all sorts of text and text/graphic adventure games.
