There's a few on ebay with a start price of £5 or £10 but no bidders as far as I can see

Try the market websites and see if you can get an idea ?

Why was this? I could understand if the notes had dates of births, locations or names on them but a few random numbers=megabucks???

Currency collectors highly prize early editions of new currency, and will pay handsomely to obtain examples.

No, me neither!
I see Andy-Hughes. Have all the lucrative numbers been snapped up or are there still numbers that collectors want? If so how would I find out which numbers these are in case they pass through my hands although when they eventually do I'd have probably forgotten this information.

I think the chances of any casual recipient getting their hands on any of the valuable notes is slim to none.

That said, it may be worth looking out when the other denominations switch to plastic, as they will in the coming months or years.
How do you get in line for a note of these valued numbers? Are they ordered or when they come out do these collectors ask for all change in fivers scouring the notes for valuable numbers or maybe just chance?

Also are these notes actually valuable to anyone outside the collectors? In other words will they be worth a lot more in the future?
Interesting that in the link Eve posted, only 21,000 notes were destroyed in 2015. With millions of notes circulating, (440 million of the new notes printed) 21,000 sounds remarkably small. It would also be interesting, to me at least, to know how much it costs to produce these notes compared with the old fivers.
