This sort of thing, merchants & elites dictating to the citizens, is exactly why we want out of the EU. We have no need to enter into a bullying contract where we do as the merchants tell us they want, or get penalised. Out government must be in control of our nation. And that should be applicable for all nations.
The real question is why the Walloons were the only folk to object. A major blow to any remainers' arguments to stay in the EU; but we must be sure our national politicians have a higher standard of morality when it comes to representing the interests of the people.

Because the politician in the EU clearly have no care for the will of the people as long as they get paid. There is not accountability to the people they pretend to represent, regardless of nationality. A clear cut case, I'd have thought, of destroying any desire to remain.
But as I said, we need to ensure the more accountable national politicians don't treat the public with the same disdain; but there is a better chance of that since they will be nearer to the people, i.e. more local, than some far away European politician, who even got there from the awful PR route.
