Appendix, Why Have We Got Them?

I don't think I'd consider us all starting out as female, IMO we all start out as a standard default that can develop to be female or male, and the coding for that kicks in later, when the ddetails are sorted. Strangely the default happens to include nipples (for mammals) which had we been designed rather than evolved, wouldn't be the case.

I did know what the appendix used to do, once. Can't recall now; you'll need to Google it.

Re. OP. I remember my biology teacher explaining that the appendix was a vestigial remain from when we were herbivores and needed to digest huge amounts of vegetable fibre.

The appendix in humans is certainly not vestigial.
Herbivorous origin of humans.......naaah!
Although the function is unknown for certainty, on histological grounds, there is little doubt that it plays a part in the immune system of the gut.
Could it play a role in ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease or dare i say it bowel cancer?
