Is anybody else on AB fed up with the increase of Americanisations into the English language ?
My pet hate at the moment is : "Can I get ......." rather than "Can I please have......". I was in a queue for some coffee a couple of days ago when a lady asked fora hot chocolate as follows : "Can I get a luxury hot chocolate and can I also get no marshmallows". Drives me mad !! (But then I have been called an old curmudgeon !)

Yes, "can I get...." drives me mad too. I work in an amusement arcade, and people say "Can I get a pound of twos? " no you can't, I want to say, I'll get them for you because that's my job. You can't come and get them.
I don't understand why someone should be bothered by pronunciation over there. Language changes...in both directions. If I'm not mistaken, pronunciation in the new England States is said to be closer to the English spoken in Shakespeare's time than any present day accents here in the UK.
As for "americanisms"...if you don't like them, don't use them.
Bill Bryson has a wonderful book about language where he explains that many American words which annoy people, such as gotten, are simply left over from the early pioneers, it still exists here in forgotten and a couple of other words but is generally lost now. So it's our fault really.
China Jan - I was going to say exactly the same thing as you. I also feel the same about 'gotten'. Another thing that I have started to notice is people who answer questions and begin with 'So'.
When it comes to written mistakes. - could of, would of, grrrrrrr!!!!
I'm concerned that you think that "Can I get" (which also drives me mad) should be replaced by "Can I please have", as that suggests that you don't appreciate the difference between 'can' and 'may'!
Likewise I hate the signs in Sainsbury's cafés which say (roughly) "Only food purchased in this restaurant can be eaten here". I want to ask why! Does eating food purchased elsewhere break some rule of physics? If not, 'can' needs to be replaced with 'may'!!!
