To find the next term the rule is multiply by (a) and then subtract (b), where (a) and (b) are integers.

multiply by 7 then subtract 4
so a=7, b = 4

You aren't doing your son any favours by getting AB to do his homework.
If he can't understand it, ask the teacher to spend a few moments explaining the questions.
What happens at exam time when he is on his own in the test room?
formula is:
1a-b=3 and 3a-b=17

add b to both so 1a=3 and 3a =17 therefore 2a=14
