May sound like a daft question but why do slugs come out at night onto my garden path? Why at night? And where do they come from? What do they do during the day?

Because its cooler for their soft bodies and some of their predators (birds) aren't around. Hide under stones and rocks.

I HATE THEM KILL THEM ALL !!!

I paid 4.99 for a clematis and they scoffed the lot in one night ...

Well mine lurk in the bushes during the day, watching to see if I put any new plants in and then when darkness falls they come out and eat them.
I do know Calla lily plants are like slug caviar : I swear the had the lot before I reached the patio doors. CHAVS of the garden have now sent slug pellet ASBO s to them all.
Not a daft question at all, they are mostly nocturnal by nature and their night-time manuvers are can be especiallydevistating on wet evenings. This is why I prefere to water plants in the moring rather than at night, its one thing providing them with a meal but a drink to wash it down too ? forget it! Long live slug eaters! ie hedgehogs, badgers, birds and frogs and toads etc.
They are swines of the highest degree! They spend the day lurking around under under cover laughing themselves silly and then come out at night and eat my lettuces.I had a thrush in my garden yesterday who snaffled one from under a stone and proceeded to roll it about in the earth and then devoured it bit by bit .I watched this through my binos with great joy !!!
I know you should live and let live but when I have gone to a great deal of trouble to grow and tend stuff I get soooo hacked off to find it decimated by these bggrs.
